EMDG funding helps SM Pro Audio excel in global markets

Melbourne-based Audio Supermarket Pty Ltd, an audio and music component manufacturer, has expanded into international markets with the assistance of the Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) scheme.

Audio Supermarket, which marketed and distributed SM Pro Audio which commenced in 2001, has grown rapidly from just designing microphone preamplifiers, DI units, and headphone amplifiers. SM Pro Audio designs and manufactures, while Audio Supermarket distributes innovative, solution-oriented audio products for the professional and project studio, live sound, and installed A/V markets.

The EMDG scheme encourages businesses to increase international marketing and promotion expenditure to achieve sustainable international sales. The scheme also provides businesses with an opportunity to enter and embed themselves in global value chains – something that encompasses 80 per cent of global trade.

Audio Supermarket is an excellent example which demonstrates this. The company has become a global business, with partners and distributors in markets across North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. This innovative company has benefited substantially from its export promotion activity over the past five years, having received EMDG grants in each of those years amounting to over $345,000. During this period, SM Pro Audio’s export sales grew to over $1 million annually, but more significantly, in the process attracted the attention of Harman International.

On the eve of the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) show 2015, Harman announced that it had acquired and incorporated Melbourne-based SM Pro Audio. The decision was made because the company is also an innovation hub for a wide range of pro audio and MI technologies across several product brands.

No doubt Audio Supermarket will continue to operate as a distribution company and in future will build up other Australian brand names which are primed for global distribution with the help of EMDG. Harman’s Professional Division President, Blake Augsburger, said the depth of innovation and quality of engineering talent at privately owned SM Pro Audio was expected to provide Harman Professional with a strong internal technology partner for a broad range of products. The NAMM show, the world’s largest trade-only event for the music products industry, opened with a Harman Professional press conference during which the Soundcraft Ui remote-controlled rack-mount mixer developed by SM Pro Audio was announced. “I am very pleased to welcome the SM Pro Audio team to the Harman fold,” said Mr Augsburger.

“Together, we look forward to bringing a new depth of innovation to the broadest array of customers around the world. To that point, we have already envisioned ideas and concepts where SM Pro Audio products and technologies could benefit Soundcraft and Studer mixers, dbx signal processing and AKG transducers. “We expect to introduce Harman products that feature SM Pro Audio technology in early 2015,” added Mr Augsburger.
